The development of the tractor changed not only agriculture, but society and the entire economy. Before this modern machine was widely used, farmers plowed and harvested using teams of horses and mules. The work was time-intensive, labor-intensive and expensive.

By the time gas-powered tractors came around in the early 20th century, America was poised for a change. England had undergone an Industrial Revolution a century earlier, and the U.S. had its own switch from rural to city life starting in the mid-to-late 19th century.

Yet there were still plenty of farms to tend, and mouths to feed, which meant many people still worked the land as their ancestors had done. The widespread use of the tractor meant fewer hands needed on the farm. As tractor manufacturing grew from 2,000 units to more than half a million units between 1900 and 1950, agricultural efficiency increased dramatically. This meant more people free to work in factories and grow the economy, and also reduced in lower food costs across the country.
