1. Honda Civic Type R
2. Opel Astra OPC

A higher performing version of the regular Civic, the Type R was a favorite of boy racers around the globe. First produced in 1997, it is currently in its 5th generation and is available as a 3 or 4-door hatchback or 4-door sedan. The 5th generation is powered by a 2.0-liter engine capable of producing over 300 brake horsepower. A direct rival, the top of the range Opel Astra OPC produced around 237 brake horsepower.

1. Ford Bronco V8
2. Hummer H3

The H3 model of the Hummer was introduced in 2005 and is by far the smallest of the Hummer models. Three engine options were available for the H3 with most powerful a 5.3 liter V8 which produced 300 brake horsepower. Somewhat similar in size, the 1984 Ford Bronco V8, although driven by a 5.8-liter V8 engine, did not produce the same amount of power; it put out around 156 brake horsepower.

1. Lamborghini Countach LP 400 S
2. Lamborghini Diablo

Fast, loud, brash are all adjectives that could be used to describe the Diablo. Powered by either a 5.7 or 6.0-liter V12, this sports car pushed out 595 brake horsepower. In contrast, its spiritual grandaddy, the Lamborghini Countach LP400 S produced around 350 brake horsepower.

1. Mazda Mx-6 Coupe
2. Nissan Almera

This 2-door sports coupe was marketed by Mazda between 1987 and 1997. It featured two generations; the second was made from 1991 and was powered by four different engine options, the largest a 2.5-liter V6 capable of producing close to 200 brake horsepower. Japanese rival, Nissan, introduced the Almera at around the same time. It was down on power to the Mx-6 Coupe, producing around 169 brake horsepower in top-of-the-range models.

In the early 90s Formula One team, McLaren, launched the F1. This high-performance sports car was powered by a 6.1-liter V12 engine that produced over 600 brake horsepower. Legendary F1 driver Ayrton Senna had help designing the Honda NSX. It was a great sports car for the everyday user and produced close to 290 brake horsepower.

2. BMW 503

The BMW 503 was two-door, two-seater and came in the form of a coupe or cabriolet. It was produced by BMW between 1956 and 1959 with 413 built over that period. It was aimed in particular at the US market, but saleswise, performed poorly. Its V8 engine produced around 150 brake horsepower. A car from the same period, the Porsche 550, was powered by a 1.5-liter Type 547 engine which produced 108 brake horsepower

1. Volkswagen Atlas
2. Chevrolet Captiva

The Atlas is German manufacturer Volkswagen's new full-sized SUV. Introduced in 2017, the Atlas is powered by either a 2.0 or 3.6-liter petrol engine. The larger engine generates 276 brake horsepower. A rival SUV from Chevrolet, the Captiva, produces around 228 brake horsepower from its 3.2-liter V6 engine.

2. Chevrolet Baretta

When Acura was first launched in 1986, this was one of only two models offered. The first generation Legend was powered by a 2.5-liter V6 engine. It produced around 150 brake horsepower. A vehicle from the same year, the Chevrolet Baretta, produced around 135 brake horsepower thanks to its V6 motor, but was still less than the Legend.

2. Dodge Viper

Designed by Tom Gale, who helped design the famous Lamborghini Diablo Viper RT/10, the Viper was introduced in 1992. It is powered by an 8-liter V10 engine which produced 400 brake horsepower. The top-of-the-range Chevrolet Camaro at the time produced around 330 brake horsepower.

Perhaps one of the most famous cars ever produced, the Mini first appeared in England 1959 with the Mark 1. Early models produced around 34 brake horsepower. A small car that rivals the Mini and was introduced two-years earlier, the Fiat 500, produced only 13 brake horsepower!

1. VW Scirocco 1.4-liter)
2. Lotus Elise

This 2-door, rear-wheel drive roadster first turned an engine over in anger in 1996. Still produced today, the Elise remains a fun, nimble car to drive with 130 brake horsepower under your right foot. Although a newer car, the 2008 VW Scirocco is in a similar mold but not as nimble. Powerwise, it runs the Elise close, coming in at 118 brake horsepower thanks to its TSi engine.

A four-door saloon car with epic performance – yes that’s the Maserati Quattroporte! The history of this model goes back to 1963, but the current model, the VI, really stands out. The top of the range model features a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that pushes out an astonishing 523 break horsepower! In terms of executive luxury, you do not get better than the Mercedes Benz C Class. Its AMG model produces just over 500 brake horsepower, almost as much as the Quattroporte.

1. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
2. Rambler Rogue V8

Perhaps one of the lesser-known muscle cars, the Rogue certainly had the credentials. Not only was it a lightweight two-door coupe, but it had all the power it needed thanks to a 280 horsepower producing V8. Sadly, it was up against Mustang's Camaros and GTO's and never really stood a chance in that company. Entry level Chevrolet Corvette Stingray's produced around 210 brake horsepower in comparison.

1. Duesenberg SJ
2. De Lahaye 165 Cabriolet

A real looker, the SJ was only for the rich and famous. After all, it was produced during the Depression, so the man in the street was certainly not going to get behind the wheel. These cars had a supercharged motor which produced 265 brake horsepower and were capable of traveling at over 100 mph. In comparison, the 1938 De Lahaye 165 Cabriolet produced close to 245 brake horsepower.

1. Ford Mustang Mach 1
2. Chevrolet Corvette C1

Released in 1970, the Mach 1 was powered by a 5.7-liter V8 engine which produced just over 300 brake horsepower. In contrast, the first of the Chevrolet Corvette, the C1, was powered by a 3.9-liter straight six engine which produced 123 brake horsepower in manual transmission models.

2. Volvo S90

A popular station wagon produced by Swedish manufacturer, Volvo, the V90 is spacious, modern and offers many features as a standard version. It offers comfortable seating for five people and produces between 250 to 315 brake horsepower depending on the engine chosen. The top of the range Toyota Auris, a similar type of passenger vehicle, produces around 142 brake horsepower in comparison.

1. Aston Martin DB9
2. Zenvo TS1 GT

With an engine that pushes out 1.163 brake horsepower, it is easy to see why any car nut with the cash wants to bay a Zenvo TS1 GT (despite its silly name). Powered by a 5.8-liter V8 engine with not one, but two superchargers, the TS1 will cost around $1.2 million. The Aston Martin DB9, a true beauty it must be said, cannot match the TS1 in power stakes, pushing out 510 brake horsepower.

1. Chev C/K 4.1-liter straight six
2. Dodge Shelby Dakota

With input from the legendary Caroll Shelby, the Dakota feature a 5.2-liter V-8 capable of 175 brake horsepower; this was coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission. In 1989, that made for a performance truck that was very impressive and more than what a 1974 Chev C/K 4.1-liter straight six produced.

1. Hyundai Equus
2. Chrysler Sebring

The Equus competed in the full-sized luxury class under its manufacturer, Hyundai. It was built between 1999 and 2016, with the second generation featuring two limited editions, as well as a limousine. The Equus is powered by a V8 engine which produces over 400 brake horsepower. A similar vehicle in the same segment in the United States, the Chrysler Sebring, was a top-of-the-range model and boasted a 3.5-liter V6 which produced 253 brake horsepower.

1. Hennessy Venom
2. LaFerrari FXX K

Another 1000 brake horsepower hypercar, the LaFerrari FXX K is powered by a 6.3-liter V1 engine. Only 32 were built at a cost of $2.7 million - a lot to pay for a car that cannot be used on the road. The Hennessy Venom is based on the Lotus Elise and comes in at around 800 brake horsepower for the entry-level model.

2. Nissan 300ZX Turbo

A quirky offering from Nissan, the 300ZX quickly became a favorite. With 300 brake horsepower in a small coupe, the 300ZX was quick! It even offered rear wheel steering which made it handle even better. In contrast, rival Toyota's Supra Twin Turbo produced around 280 brake horsepower.

A modern '60s throwback, this muscle car takes design features from all the classics and packages it together with a 6.4-liter V8 LS9 engine from General Motors which produces 640 brake horsepower, far more than the original grandaddy all muscle cars, the 1965 Ford Mustang.

2. Jaguar XJ X351

Designed by Ian Callum, the Jaguar XJ X351 was first revved in anger in 2010 and is still currently in production. This full-sized four-door luxury saloon has numerous power options with the most powerful a 5.0-liter V8 petrol supercharged engine, which produces 542 brake horsepower. In comparison, a Ferrari classic, the F40 produces around 477 brake horsepower with its U.S. spec engine.

2. Koenigsegg Regera

If it's speed and acceleration you are after, the Koenigsegg Regera is the car for you. It can reach 62mph in an astonishing 2.8 seconds thanks to its twin-turbo 5.0-liter V8 that pushes out an astonishing 1500 brake horsepower. In comparison, the Ferrari F50, a 90's hypercar, produces around 739 brake horsepower.

1. Golf 4 Estate
2. Subaru Exiga

The Exiga is a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) which has formed part of the Subaru fleet since 2008. Essentially a wagon, the Exiga carries five passengers and cargo with ease. The top of the range model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo engine capable of producing 221 brake horsepower. The Golf 4 Estate, introduced in 1999 and marketed until 2006 had many engine options, with the top-of-the-range model pushing out 187 brake horsepower thanks to its VR6 powerplant.

1. Ford Mustang
2. Toyota 2000GT

Manufactured under license by Yamaha, the 2000GT sports car was a model offered by Toyota between 1967 and 1970. Essentially, this was the first supercar built by a Japanese firm. The 2000GT was powered by a 2.0-liter straight six engine capable of producing 150 brake horsepower. The first Ford Mustangs, released in 1965 produced far less horsepower. In fact, they came in at just over 100 brake horsepower. Later models, however, soon added some venom!

1. Porsche 356
2. Alfa Romeo 4C

This mid-engine, rear wheel sports car was first marketed by Alfa Romeo in 2014. It was featured as a 2-door coupe and roadster and is powered by a 1.75-liter turbocharged engine which produces 237 brake horsepower. The 4C's top speed is 160 mph. Although not from the same era, the Porsche 356 is a true beauty, much like the 4C. It, however, doesn't have the same power output, producing 95 brake horsepower.

1. Range Rover Evoque
2. Land Rover

This compact crossover SUV was launched by Range Rover in 2011. It is available in a three and five-door version and either as a two or four-wheel drive. The top of the range Evoque comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine which produces 237 brake horsepower. Compared to its cousin, the Land Rover doesn't quite produce the grunt, coming in at around 91 brake horsepower for the 3.50-liter V6 version.

2. Mercedes Benz SSK

Produced between 1928 and 1932, the SSK was a short-wheelbase roadster designed by Ferdinand Porsche. Only 40 were built, of which half was used for racing. The SSK was powered by a 7.0-liter engine through 4-speed automatic or manual transmissions and produced up to 300 brake horsepower. In comparison, a vehicle from the same era, the Bugatti Type 57, produced around 135 brake horsepower.

1. Audi R8 4.2 FSI R Tronic
2. BMW 1 Series

This mid-engined two-seat sports car was first marketed by Audi in 2006. Driven by a 5.2-liter FSI V10 engine, the R8 has plenty of oomph, 414 brake horsepower to be exact. Although the BMW 1 Series comes with a range of engine options, none come close to matching the R8 in terms of horsepower.

2. Chrysler PT Cruiser

This retro-styled sports car was marketed by Chrysler between 1997 and 2002, first under the Plymouth brand and then Chrysler from 2001. Over 11,000 units of this 2-door, rear-wheel drive roadster were produced. It produced around 213 brake horsepower thanks to its 3.5-liter V6 engine, far more than its stablemate from the same year, the 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

1. Chevrolet Cruze
2. Ford Edge

Ford Edge competes in the mid-size crossover SUV segment. Currently in its second generation, the Edge offers three-engine options on US models with the 3.5-liter Duratec V6 being the largest available; it pushes out 280 brake horsepower. The Cruze, a sedan offering from Chevrolet, manages around 190 in top-of-the-range models.

1. Ford Thunderbird
2. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

One of the most famous marques of the Corvette is the Mk II Stingray, produced between 1963 and 1967. This classic had either a 2-speed automatic gearbox or 3-speed manual, with a range of engine options including small and big block V8’s which produced over 400 brake horsepower. Although the 1967 Ford Thunderbird with the V8 CobraJet engine came close at 387 horsepower, it did not outpower the Stingray.

1. Toyota Camry
2. Hyundai Aslan

This executive four-door sedan entered the luxury car segment in 2015. The Hyundai Aslan offers two powerplant options with the top of the range model featuring a 3.3-liter V6 capable of producing 294 brake horsepower. A rival, the Toyota Camry, had a top of the range model between 2011 and 2017 that was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 motor which produced 268 brake horsepower- close but certainly not as powerful as the Aslan.

1. Nissan X-Trail
2. Jeep Commander

The Commander, a mid-sized SUV was produced by Jeep between 2006 and 2010. The top of the range Commander was powered by a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 which produced 357 brake horsepower. By comparison, the Nissan X-Trail's top-of-the-range model only produces 169 brake horsepower.

This hybrid offering from Lexus is safe, reliable, spacious and offers a comfortable drive. The hybrid engine offers excellent gas mileage including 29 mpg in the city. Those numbers make it more economical in city driving than some vehicles are on the open road. The hybrid engine is no slouch either, producing 338 brake horsepower. Rival luxury brand Acura produces the RL, which is a little down on performance but comes close in terms of the power stakes with its engine pushing out 300 brake horsepower.

2. Mercedes SLR McClaren

Developed in conjunction with the Formula 1 team, McLaren, the SLR made its debut in 2003 and was built until 2010. With a 5.4 L supercharged M155 SLR V8 under the hood and a manual gearbox, the SLR was somewhat of a monster and generated over 600 brake horsepower! In contrast, rivals BMW produced the M5, one of their high-performance vehicles at the same time. It produced 500 brake horsepower thanks to its 5.0-liter V10 motor.

Has there ever been a car more iconic than the Volkswagen Beetle? Or a car produced for a period of over 65 years like the Beetle was (the last rolled off the production line in 2003 in Mexico)? As their popularity increased in the United States from the 1950's onwards, their power increased as well with the Beetle pushing out around 36 brake horsepower. At the same time in Europe, the Fiat 500 was becoming popular. Also a small car, it pushed out a mere 13 brake horsepower!

The Phantom is a name synonymous with Rolls Royce and has been in production since the 1920s. The latest model, released in 2017, is a luxury four-door saloon powered by a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 which produces 563 brake horsepower. Another luxury brand, the Mercedes C Class AMG produces just over 500 brake horsepower
